MightyKids Hydrotherapy Programme

In collaboration with the Wilson Home Trust, we have set up a new 8 week goal based 1:1 hydrotherapy programme, offered at the Wilson Centre. It's evidence based and uses standardised goal setting and outcome measurement, with sessions taking place in a dedicated hydrotherapy pool. Our aim is to not only assist the child, but also the family in developing confidence with handling and exercises in the water that they can continue on at the conclusion of the programme.

Available to all children with physical disability. Funding may be applied for directly through the Wilson Home Trust or by using the Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand getPhysical e-card system for current financial members.

Registrations can be completed through the online form.

  • Hydrotherapy is exercise and movement that is carried out in warm water. The pool is heated to between 30-35 celsius, so it is warmer than a normal swimming pool. Therapists use exercises and properties of the warm water to support your child to achieve meaningful therapy goals. You do not need to be able to swim to take part in therapy in the hydrotherapy pool.

  • We currently offer an 8 week Hydrotherapy Programme that is school term based. We run sessions on Monday, Wednesday & Friday afternoons.

Intensive school holiday sessions are intermittently run for families short on time. Please contact us directly for dates and session times.

  • We currently support children from 8 months to 18 years of age with physical challenges and suitable goals.

  • Your child will be supported by an experienced physiotherapist in the water and will be guided to participate in individualised activities to support your child’s goals such as active mobility, sitting balance, standing balance, walking training, water confidence including blowing bubbles, floating, kicking and upper limb strokes. All hydrotherapy sessions last a maximum of 30 minutes.

Involvement of a parent / caregiver in the pool is highly encouraged.

  • We recommend wearing a comfortable and well fitting swimming costume, goggles if desired, towel(s), water and snacks for after the session.

  • Individualised goals are set at the beginning of the term to address your child’s needs. Hydrotherapy sessions are customised sessions facilitated by an experienced Physiotherapist providing activities to support your child’s holistic water and land based independence goals such as active mobility, sitting balance, standing balance, or walking pattern. Having fun is also an essential! Session activities are progressed throughout the term providing increased challenges as your child progresses. Our aim is to provide both parents / caregivers and children increased  confidence in performing hydrotherapy activities to carry on in the community following the term programme.

  • Please contact your physiotherapist directly as soon as possible if you are unable to make a session due to illness.

  • Grant funding may be sought through the Wilson Home Trust as part of the wider Equipment and Activity Grant application process for those who meet the criteria, and can be made at any time through their website https://wilsonhometrust.org.nz/grants/ where this will be considered separately to the one application per year limit for other grant funding requests.

In order to meet their criteria you will need to confirm your child has a physical disability and then provide information about your financial situation.

  • Yes, we can use an e-Voucher (maximum of $200.00 each term) from the Cerebral Palsy Society towards your Hydrotherapy costs. There may be a balance left to pay.

What other families say about our programme?

“I wanted to share some positive feedback with you regarding the recent session which was truly fantastic. The content was engaging, and it's clear that he thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, he couldn't stop talking about it even after we left the session. It's amazing to see how enthusiastic he is about it”.

“So impressed. Just from our first session, I was able to gain valuable exercises to begin implementing in and outside the pool. I am looking forward to our upcoming sessions”.

“Do you remember in our first meeting you asked me the reason I signed up for the sessions? I always believe that physical activity plays the important part in our health. It not only helps strengthen bones and muscles, it also helps to improve brain health, and improve our ability to do everyday activities.
After 6 sessions, she proved that we were right to choose you guys because she has improved so much. She can now sit by herself confidently, she is now able to stand with a minimal support. She is enjoying her bath time and also dive under the water when she is at the pool. We just want to say thank you and express our appreciation to MightyKids Rehab. I hope more kids will have access to these and we also hope to come back in the future for more sessions”.
